The world’s oldest joke, traced back to 1900 BC in  Mesopotamia, is about farting, suggesting that flatulence – derived from the Latin word “flatus”, the act of blowing – was as much of an entertaining no-no for the ancients as it is for us today.

Hi there! I’m a guy, who, like everyone, FARTS! It’s a normal thing and nothing to be ashamed of. Farts have started wars, gotten people kicked out of rehab (me!) and virtually all animals fart too without an ounce of self conciousness. I live in Daytona Beach, I have a great service dog named Rose who farts too, she gets scared when she farts, she’s always in shock and gets up and moves away from the fart. She is a real cropduster! Unless she’s sleeping and doesn’t notice, then it just kind of wafts up and hits you. I like piña coladas. (And gettin’ caught in the rain.)

The fart that caused a rebellion in Egypt in 569 B.C.

According to Herodotus, who is a Greek historian, there was a rebellion in Egypt that made Apries, the King of Egypt, worried about his power. To calm the crowd and stop the rebellion, Apries sent one of his commanders, Amasis, to suppress the rebellion. However, the rebels crowned Amasis the new king.

After this, Apries sent over his popular advisor, Patarbemis, to handle the situation and talk to Amasis, but in response, Amasis farted in front of Patarbemis and told him to “carry that back to Apries.”

According to the Greek historian, there is no evidence about how the message was communicated, but Apries reacted by punishing the messenger and cutting off his nose and ears. Apries’ reaction was so ruthless that everyone heard about it and it made the rebellion against Apries even stronger. Eventually, he assured the official reign of Amasis from 569 to 525 B.C.
